SELF-ESTEEM
Self-esteem is the evaluative
component of self-concept , which consists of positive and negative evaluations
of one's own self ( Worchel , et al . , 2000 in Dayakisni ) . Thus ,
self-esteem is a basis for evaluating or assessing any thought of yourself
either positive or negative . The sources of the most important in the
formation or development of self-esteem is in the family experience , feedback
on performance and social comparison ( Michener & Delamater , 1999) .
Coopersmith (1967 ) concluded that there were four types of parental behaviors
that can improve self-esteem : ( 1 ) demonstrate acceptance , affection ,
interest , and involvement in events and activities experienced by the child ,
( 2 ) Apply the clear limits on children's behavior firmly and consistently , (
3 ) provide freedom within limits and appreciate the initiative , ( 4 ) The
form of discipline that is not forced ( to avoid privileges and discuss the
reasons rather than physical punishment ) ( Dayakisni & Hudaniyah , 2009) .
People who have low self-esteem
succumbing to an attitude of self ( self-defeating ) that can memperangkap
themselves into a vicious circle . Usually because they expect failure , they
become anxious , showed little businesses / small and eliminate the significant
challenges in their lives . Then people low self-esteem when they fail in doing
an activity or purpose , will always blame himself , it encourages him to
quickly give up and do not have a competent soul again . This means that people
do not want to try harder to reach the goal , when in his first attempt fails ,
then he did not repeat inging or learn from the failures he had ever received .
He tends membbuang her goal and replace it with another destination without
ever feeling before the goal is reached ( Dayakisni & Hudaniyah , 2009) .
As a means of measuring social ,
self esteem can also be measured . Self-esteem can be measured explicitly or
implicitly . Measurements done explicitly by asking people to rate ( ranging
from very appropriate to not conform ) against a statement about yourself ,
such as " I feel valued enumerated others" . Measurements ririskiky
implicitly done by measuring the speed of reaction to a stimulus that is
associated with the self . Subliminal stimulus is given ( shown quickly to be
consciously recognized ) in hopes of reducing the likelihood of people do not
respond as it is to display a particular impression on him .
Self - esteem is often measured
as a rank in dimensions ranging from negative to positive or from low to high .
A different approach is to ask respondents to indicate what their ideal self ,
their real self , and then examines the differences between the two . The
greater the difference between the ideal self , the lower self - esteem .
Although the specific content may vary over time , the differences tend to be
stable to ideal self ( Baron & Byrne , 2003) .
Some of the benefits of why
everyone always mengigninkan positive self-esteem among these :
1 . Positive self-esteem makes people feel good about themselves in
the middle of the certainty of death that a time will faces.
2 . Positive self-esteem allows people to cope with anxiety ,
loneliness , and social rejection . In this case , the price of an instrument
measuring social self " sociameter " to see the extent to which a
person feels accepted and blend with the social environment . Thus , the more
positive self-esteem you have, the more shows that he increasingly felt welcome
and fused with other people around him .
Self-esteem is very important for every human being. due to self-esteem, people can know
the advantages and disadvantages of each. So
they can be introspective and always motivated to do good. Other than that man can also
understand the positions of others and do not always make mistakes to others.
Appreciate yourself and other people
appreciate what he does.
