Hunt tests to gauge reaction to the letter match task developed by Posner , Boise , Eichelman , and Taylor ( 1969) . Task requires subjects to determine whether the two letters ( for example Aa or Aa ) suitable or not . From the perspective of information processing , physical compatibility condition required only if the subject of the letters on short-term memory and decision making . In the name matching conditions , in addition to process two objects in short-term memory , subjects also had to get back the name of the second object ( which is stored in long term memory ) , make decisions , and then pressing a button - reaction time Hunt assumes that that physically matches only reflect structural processes that are faced by visually encoding and benchmarking , diamana matching name reflects the efficiency of encoding information on a level , where the physical representation of a letter relating to the names of the letters in the long-term memory . In general , the speed of the retrieve information from long-term memory is hypothesized to be a measure of verbal ability .
Studies conducted by Hunt and others to be significant because of two reasons . First , they show that the paradigm of information processing procedure gives much useful for the study of human intelligence . Second , short-term memory associated with the verbal component of intelligence , not merely because of the amount of short -term memory to remember in dealing with intelligence , but because of simple cognitive processes and operations , such as identifying letters in a name or memory of trigram , which relies on long-term memory and short term memory is sensitive to intellectual differences of each individual .
