Social identity is a definition of what is in him , personal attributes and attribute about him that are shared with others . As an example of gender and race . Each one builds on his social identity , from early humans have their own views about who he then how he label himself. According
to Sherman ( in Byrne , 2003) Social Identity includes many unique
characteristics , such as a person's name and the concept of self , in
addition to many other characteristics that are similar to others. We has
many aspects of our identity from others , who we are is determined by
heredity . Physical
characteristics such as gender , race , and hair color is an example of
heredity , but there are also other genetic influences . Genetic
effect is greatest on popolaritas self perception and physical
appearance , but there are significant aspects although much smaller ,
ie the effect on the perception of anxiety , happiness , and academic
ability . We often identify the extent to which we are similar or not similar to other people or the environment around us . According
to Sussman ( in Byrne , 2003) When someone changing social context , to
build a new social identity can be a source of great stress .When
people are in a different dingkungan the previous environment , this
individual will experience enormous stress and this is his way of trying
to survive in a new environment and cope with the stress in many ways
he did . I
found a small example , the Madurese who was a student in one of the
public universities outside Java , they will enter a new place , a new
culture . At
first bereka experiencing severe stress , but over time they will adapt
to the other , to defend himself , usually one that will look for
groups that have similarities with him . Whether the similarities of culture , language , behavior , character , and others .Source: Byrne , R. A. ( 2003) . Social psychology . Jakarta : Elangga .
